(…) “Entendida la representación, entonces, como relación, como proceso, como el mecanismo de relevo en los intercambios de energía, de valor y de publicidad. No hay nada en este modelo que garantize la direccionalidad de la estructura, por el contrario, sugiere una estructura inherentemente inestable, reversible y dialéctica. La relación de la representación con lo que representa, por ejemplo, puede transferir poder / valor a la representación y extraerlo a partir de lo representado, pero inherente a tal entendimiento estaría el supuesto de que el cociente de poder / valor se origina con los representados, que ha sido (temporalmente) alienado, transferido, y siempre puede ser devuelto. Si “presentación” es una donación, un regalo, una transferencia de riqueza y poder, “re-presentación” es siempre un dar de vuelta, un regalo devuelto o (como el niño que regala algo y quiere luego que sea devuelto, una parodia del potlatch) a tomar de vuelta el presente. En las representaciones, como en sueños, comienzan las responsabilidades, la responsabilidad política que conlleva la relación representante / representado, las obligaciones mutuas del donante y el deudor, en cambio, lo que Derrida llama “economimesis” Si los impuestos sin representación son una tiranía, la representación sin impuestos es una irresponsabilidad.

Representación y responsabilidad

¿Cuál es la relación entre representación y responsabilidad? La respuesta tradicional es que están profundamente implicadas entre sí. Hay una especie de correspondencia entre ellas, una resonancia mutua, una co-recepción. La buena o verdadera representación es “responsable” de lo que representa y de quien la representa.

The Exile of Representation

(…) “Representation understood, then, as relationship, as process, as the relay mechanism in exchanges of power, value, and publicity: nothing in this model guarantees the directionality of the structure. On the contrary, it suggests an inherently unstable, reversible, and dialectical structure. The relation of the representation to what it represents, for instance, may transfer power/value to the representation and drain it from the represented, but inherent in such an understanding would be the assumption that the power/value quotient originates with the represented, that it has been (temporarily) alienated, transferred, and may always be taken back. If “presentation” is a giving, a gift, a transfer of wealth and power, “re-presentation” is always a giving back, a present returned or (in what used to be called “Indian Giving”, a parody of potlatch) a taking back of the present. In representations, as in dreams, begin responsibilities -the political responsibility entailed in the representative/represented relationship; the mutual obligations of the donor and debtor in exchange, what Derrida Calls “economimesis”. If taxation without representation is tyranny, representation without taxation is irresponsibility.

SOMEWHERE BETTER, NOWHERE BETTER recoge mis inquietudes por aspectos económicos y sociales que considero relevantes en mi entorno inmediato. Son aspectos universales que en su dimensión local toman cuerpo a través de la fotografía. Mi análisis a través de este medio hace que incluso la propia naturaleza del mismo así como sus usos se conviertan en objeto de estudio.

Por todo ello, se presentan varias series que tratan temas en apariencia inconexos que sin embargo intentan dar luz a una imagen del mundo desde la fotografía y con ella como excusa narrativa. SOMEWHERE BETTER, NOWHERE BETTER es una polifonía en la que aparecen distintos temas: la globalización versus las fronteras territoriales, el consumo y, en este nuevo contexto, de qué manera son, los usos sociales de la imagen fotográfica. Cada uno de estos temas se trata de manera independiente en una serie de fotografías con distintos elementos, espacios y lugares.

SOMEWHERE BETTER, NOWHERE BETTER collects my concerns about economic and social aspects that I consider to be relevant in my immediate environment. These are universal issues, however, when they are photographed in their local environment as an object of study, they take on a different meaning.

The different series that are presented in the book deal with topics that at first glance may seem unconnected, however, they try to illuminate an image of the world in a narrative sense through the medium of photography. SOMEWHERE BETTER, NOWHERE BETTER is a polyphony in which different topics appear; globalization verses territorial borders, consumerism as a meta-narrative verses individual personalized narratives and how social uses of photography can uncover these diametrically opposed stances. Each of these topics is explored using photography featuring different elements, spaces and places.

“Photographs, too, can make strange the familiar sights and objects of our world, although this is not usually how we think of them. Instead, we tend to think of photographs as providing us with records of how things look, and certainly this is the source of much of their pleasure and fascination. With photographs we can preserve important moments in our lives or hold in our hands images of events distant in time and place. Photographs acquaint us with things that would otherwose be inaccessible. But photographs do not simple record; their fascination is not simply that of preservation.
