Estoy leyendo la novela 2666 del escritor chileno Roberto Bolaño. Un par de amigos me habían recomendado este libro y comencé a leerlo sin saber nada de su argumento. La sorpresa está siendo muy grande al encontrarme con una novela cruda y global. Ahora estoy leyendo el cuarto capítulo, La parte de los crímenes, en la que Bolaño describe y enumera los crímenes de Santa Teresa, una ciudad mexicana que coincide con Ciudad Juárez, por lo que sucede allí y por sus características. Simplemente es desgarrador y a veces dejo de leer este largo capítulo lleno de nombres de mujeres asesinadas.
Hoy me he reencontrado con el trabajo de Mayra Martell, una joven fotógrafa mexicana. Mayra es de Ciudad Juárez y documenta los espacios privados de esas mujeres desaparecidas cuyos cuerpos no han aparecido. En sus habitaciones encontramos detalles como esta nota en la que una de ellas anotó sus metas a corto y a largo plazo. Mayra comenta sobre su trabajo: “Es como hablar de su presencia a través de los recuerdos que tienen sus familias. Son chicas que salieron a la escuela o a la tienda; que tienen cinco, 10 años desaparecidas y su familia no sabe si regresarán… Como muchas no tienen fotos, la reconstrucción es mediante la memoria. Ahora que lo pienso, creo que no fotografío la ausencia, sino la presencia que continúa en esos espacios”.

I am reading the novel 2666 , writen by the Chilean Roberto Bolaño. A couple of friends had recommended this book and I started to read it without knowing anyhting about its plot. It has been a big surprise finding this raw and global novel. Now I am reading the forth chapter, The Part About the Crimes, in which Bolaño describes and lists the crimes of Santa Teresa, a Mexican city with teh same characteristics and crimes as Ciudad Juárez. It is simply bloodcurdling, sometimes I stop reading this long chapter full of names of murdered women
Today I have found again the work of Mayra Martell, who is a young Mexican Photographer. Mayra comes from Ciudad Juárez and she documents the private spaces of the missing women whose bodies haven’t appeared. In her rooms we findwdetails as the note where one of these women wrote her aims in a short term and in a long term. Mayra says about her work: ” It is as speaking about her presence through the memories their families have. They are girls who went to school or to a shop; who are missing for 5, 10 years and their families don’t know if they will come back… As many families don’t have photos, the reconstruction is made through memory. Now I think about it, I think I don’t photograph the absence, but the presence that continues in those spaces”.

Este año va a ser el año de Paul Graham. Su arriesgado trabajo fotográfico está alcanzando el reconocimiento que merece gracias a distintas exposiciones, premios y ediciones de libros.
En el Folkwan Museum de Essen (Alemania) hay una exposición que revisa su obra desde 1981 al 2006. Esta exposición viajará a Deichtorhallenr en Hamburgo y a la Whitechapel de Londres. También se editará un libro que repasará su trayectoria.
El próximo miércoles también se inaugura una exposición en el MOMA de Nueva York con su trabajo (COMPLETO) A Shimmer of Possibility.
Paul Graham también ha sido nominado al importante premio Deutsche Borse Photography Prize y expondrá en la Photographers Gallery de Londres desde el 20 de febrero con los otros nominados: Taryn Simon, Emily Jacir y Tod Papageorge.
La editorial Steidl va a sacar otra edición de su/s libro/s A Shimmer of Possibility. En esta edición se reunirán los 12 libros en un solo volumen con portada blanda.
En fin, que Paul Graham no para este año y yo me alegro muchísimo!!
This is going to be Paul Graham’s year. His risky photographic work is getting the recognition it deserves thanks to some exhibitions, prizes and book editions.
At the Folkwan Museum de Essen (Germany) there is an exhibition that looks through his work since 1981 to 2006. This exhibition will travel to Deichtorhallenr in Hamburg and to the Whitechapel in Londres. A book that will review his trayectory will be published too.

Murakami, la curiosidad, la valentía y la fotografía / Murakami, curiosity, courage and photography
Estoy leyendo Crónica del pájaro que da cuerda al mundo de Haruki Murakami. En un diálogo dos personajes hablan sobre la curiosidad y la valentía, dos caracteristicas que siempre he asociado con los fotógrafos, especialmente con los fotógrafos documentales. Es interesante y revelador el texto. Parecería que la curiosidad es lo primero y que luego los fotógrafos se arman de valentía para continuar con sus proyectos.
“… ¿Eres valiente?
- No mucho-dije
- ¿Y nunca lo has sido, ni siquiera antes?
- Nunca, jamás lo he sido.
- ¿Y curiosidad? ¿Tienes?
- Curiso sí lo soy, un poco.
- Y no crees que la curisidad y la valentía se parecen? – dijo May Kasahara-. Donde hay valentía hay curiosidad, y donde hay curiosidad hay valentía, ¿no te parece?
- Pues sí. Es posible que se parezcan en algo – dije-. Quizá haya casos en los que coincidan , tal como dices. (…) Por ejemplo (…) Cuando entras furtivamente en el jardín de los demás parece que la valentía y la curiosidad actuén juntas. A veces, la curiosidad puede despertar el coraje o avivarlo. I am reading Haruki Murakami´s “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle”. In a dialogue two characters talk about curiosity and courage, two characteristics that i have always related to photographers, specially to documentary photographers. The text is interesting and revealing. It would seem that curiosity goes first and then photographers pluck up courage to go on with their projects.
“… Are you brave?
- Not much-I said
- And have you never been, even before?
- Never, I have never been.
- And curiosity? Are you curious?
- Curirous I am, a bit.
- And don´t you think curisity and courage are alike? – May Kasahara said-. Where there is courage there is curiosity, and where there is curiosity there is courage, don´t you think?
- Well. It is posible that they look alike- I said-. Pues sí. Perhaps there is chances where they coincide, as you say (…) For example (…) When you get in furtively in other people´s garden it seems that courage and curiosity act together. Sometimes, curiosity can arouse courage or get it going . But in most cases, curiosity soon vanishes: courage has to cover a longer way. Curiosity is like a nice friend you cannot trust who incites you and when he wants, he dissapears. And then you alone have to go on gathering all your courage”
