Mi parte de lo bueno

He descubierto el trabajo de Sarah Pickering gracias al nº 16 de la revista Foam, dedicado fotógrafos menores de 35 años.

El trabajo de Pickering me parece una buena muestra de prácticas documentales contemporáneas. Destacaría también la cohesión entre sus distintas series, como se complementan entre ellas. En la serie “Fire Scenes” refleja cómo las instituciones, en este caso el Fire Service College (la academia británica de bomberos), representan y construyen los interiores domésticos para sus ejercicios prácticos y / o investigaciones. En estas representaciones por parte de las instituciones surgen también muchos temas interesantes.

Sarah Pickering lo explica así: “Tomé imágenes antes y después de que quemaran los espacios hasta reducirse a cenizas, pero para mi, la imagen más interesante era mientras estaban ardiendo. Estaba fascinada por ese momento suspendido en el tiempo. En términos de género, son imágenes documentales, pero son eventos escenificados. Son imágenes de representaciones institucionales del mundo real. (…) piensas que estás siendo testigo de algo dramático, pero no. Aunque fotografío algo escenificado, yo no lo he escenificado. Creo que es más revelador que que yo diga “así es como creo que nos deberíamos representar”. Creo que tiene cierta importancia. Me parece que la fotografía tiene una relación difícil en el mundo del arte. Se ha criticado a la fotografía por la poca dedicación personal en al construcción de la imagen,a menos que hagas algo delante de la cámara. Tengo mucho respeto por los fotógrafos que construyen escenas para ser fotografiadas, pero yo siento que estoy reaccionando contra eso”.

I have discovered Sarah Pickering’s work thanks to nº 16 of Foam magazine, devoted to under 35 years photographers.

I consider Pickering’s work a good sample of contemporary documentary practice. I would stress the cohesion among her different series, as they complement each other. The serie “Fire Scenes” reflects how institutions, in this case the Fire Service College, represent and build the house interiors for their practical studies and/or investigations. In these institutional representations many interesting issues arise too.

Sarah Pickering explains her work this way: ” I took images before and after the units burnt the spaces down to ash, but to me, the most interesting image was while they were burning. I was fascinated with the suspended moment in time. In terms of genre, they are documentary photographs, but they are of staged events. They are images of institutional representations of the real world. (…) you feel like you are witnessing something dramatic, but you’re not. Although I am photographing something staged, I haven’t staged the events. I think it´s more revealing than me saying “this is the way that I think we could be represented”. I feel like there’s a certain amount of resonance. I think photography has a difficult relationship in the art world. it’s been criticised for there not being enough personal investment in the making of an image, unless you make something in front of the camera as well. I have a lot of respect for the work of photographers who construct scenes to be photographed, but I feel that I’m reacting against that”.

Estoy leyendo Crónica del pájaro que da cuerda al mundo de Haruki Murakami. En un diálogo dos personajes hablan sobre la curiosidad y la valentía, dos caracteristicas que siempre he asociado con los fotógrafos, especialmente con los fotógrafos documentales. Es interesante y revelador el texto. Parecería que la curiosidad es lo primero y que luego los fotógrafos se arman de valentía para continuar con sus proyectos.

“… ¿Eres valiente?

- No mucho-dije

- ¿Y nunca lo has sido, ni siquiera antes?

- Nunca, jamás lo he sido.

- ¿Y curiosidad? ¿Tienes?

- Curiso sí lo soy, un poco.

- Y no crees que la curisidad y la valentía se parecen? – dijo May Kasahara-. Donde hay valentía hay curiosidad, y donde hay curiosidad hay valentía, ¿no te parece?

- Pues sí. Es posible que se parezcan en algo – dije-. Quizá haya casos en los que coincidan , tal como dices. (…) Por ejemplo (…) Cuando entras furtivamente en el jardín de los demás parece que la valentía y la curiosidad actuén juntas. A veces, la curiosidad puede despertar el coraje o avivarlo. I am reading Haruki Murakami´s “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle”. In a dialogue two characters talk about curiosity and courage, two characteristics that i have always related to photographers, specially to documentary photographers. The text is interesting and revealing. It would seem that curiosity goes first and then photographers pluck up courage to go on with their projects.

“… Are you brave?

- Not much-I said

- And have you never been, even before?

- Never, I have never been.

- And curiosity? Are you curious?

- Curirous I am, a bit.

- And don´t you think curisity and courage are alike? – May Kasahara said-. Where there is courage there is curiosity, and where there is curiosity there is courage, don´t you think?

- Well. It is posible that they look alike- I said-. Pues sí. Perhaps there is chances where they coincide, as you say (…) For example (…) When you get in furtively in other people´s garden it seems that courage and curiosity act together. Sometimes, curiosity can arouse courage or get it going . But in most cases, curiosity soon vanishes: courage has to cover a longer way. Curiosity is like a nice friend you cannot trust who incites you and when he wants, he dissapears. And then you alone have to go on gathering all your courage”

El trabajo del fotógrafo francés Eric Tabuchi se puede ver hasta el 5 de Diciembre en la galería y editorial parisina Florence Loewy.

Esta serie sobre camiones es muy divertida. !Tabuchi se ha convertido en un experto en fotografiar desde un coche!. En su myspace hay otra serie sobre gasolineras abandonadas. La manera de distribuir su trabajo y también sus temas nos recuerdan al artista norteaméricano Edward Ruscha.

Eric Tabuchi. Alphabet Truck

The work of the French photographer Eric Tabuchi can be seen till 5th. December in the Paris gallery and publisher Florence Loewy.

This series about trucks is very funny. Tabuchi has become an expert in photographing froma car! In his myspace there is another series of abandoned petrol stations. The way of distributing his work and also his subjects reminds us to the work of the North American artist Edward Ruscha.

Añado dos blogs sobre fotografía interesantes. Los dos llevan un tiempo sin ser actualizados, pero su contenido merece muchas visitas.

Gracias al blog Heading Heast he descubierto el trabajo de Nicholas Hughes. En sus imágenes hay algo maravilloso e inquietante que me fascina.

En esta serie Nicholas Hughes se olvida de las normas básicas de la fotografía, especialmente la de paisaje, es decir, “hacer fotos cuando hay sol”, para sorprendernos con estas fotos realizadas en los parques de Londres, ¿a qúe no lo parece en absoluto?

Thanks to Heading Heast blog I have discovered Nicholas Hughes work. In his images there is something marvellous and disturbing that captivates me.

In this series Nicholas Hughes forgets all the basic photographic rules, speccially those that refer to landscape photography, that is, “take photos when is sunny”, to surprise us with these images taken at London parks, could you ahve figure this out?
